Sonia Gandhi slams centre’s silence on Khamenei assassination, seeks debate in Parliament

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the Narendra Modi-led government over its response to the reported assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling New Delhi’s silence “not neutrality but an abdication.”
In an opinion piece, she said India’s lack of a clear and firm response to what she described as a “targeted assassination” signals tacit endorsement and raises concerns about the country’s foreign policy direction. Gandhi argued that the killing of a sitting head of state during ongoing diplomatic engagements marks a serious rupture in international relations.
She also questioned the Prime Minister’s initial reaction, stating that he condemned Iran’s retaliatory actions without fully addressing the preceding events. Later expressions of “deep concern” and calls for dialogue, she said, overlooked the diplomatic efforts that were already underway before the escalation.
Highlighting the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Israel prior to the strikes, Gandhi expressed concern over what she termed a “high-profile political endorsement without moral clarity.” She noted that several global powers and members of BRICS had maintained distance amid the escalating crisis.
Gandhi further demanded a discussion in Parliament during the second phase of the Budget session on what she called the government’s “disturbing silence.”
The recent US and Israeli airstrikes reportedly targeted multiple sites in Iran, leading to widespread escalation in the region. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on US-linked assets and regional allies, intensifying tensions across West Asia.
