Saba Shawl becomes first Kashmiri woman to head central Jail Srinagar

As per the order, Shawl has been transferred from her post as Staff Officer to the Director General Prisons, J&K, and assigned charge of the high-security jail with immediate effect.
A resident of Peerbagh, Shawl cleared the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) examination in 2012 for the post of Superintendent of Police (Prisons) after completing her Master’s degree in Social Work. At a time when very few women were opting for uniformed services in the region, her selection was widely seen as a breakthrough. She secured the lone open merit position in the examination.
Before joining the Prisons Department, Shawl worked as a senior community development consultant and was associated with the Indo Global Social Service Society, focusing on grassroots initiatives and capacity-building programmes.
After her selection, she underwent six months of professional training and was posted at various correctional facilities across the Union Territory, including Central Jail Kothbalwal and Kupwara Jail, where she gained extensive experience in prison administration.
