National Conference MP from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, on Sunday strongly criticised the government’s decision to close the historic Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), terming the move a “disgrace.”
In a post on X, Ruhullah said the landmark is often made available for cultural events, dance and music programmes, but was shut down when people gathered peacefully to mourn and express solidarity over the loss of innocent lives. He maintained that the demonstrations were entirely peaceful and questioned why public grief was being treated as a law-and-order issue.
The MP urged authorities not to interfere in what he described as deeply emotional moments for the people of Kashmir. He also cautioned those responsible for the decision against suppressing public sentiment, calling the action shameful and unnecessary.
