The grounds cited by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for revoking the Letter of Permission granted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College (SMVDMC) have come under sharp criticism, with students of the institution disputing the regulator’s claims.
Speaking to reporters, the students said that the college’s classrooms, laboratories and other infrastructure are fully functional and well maintained. They asserted that the institution has all the facilities required for medical education and described the infrastructure as being in excellent condition, rejecting allegations of deficiencies mentioned by the NMC.
The students said they are directly affected by the decision and have first-hand knowledge of the ground situation, which, according to them, does not align with the justification given for the withdrawal of permission.
Reacting to the development, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed questioned the intent behind the NMC’s move, alleging that the decision was taken under pressure from certain leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and right-wing fringe groups.
She claimed that the NMC should acknowledge the real reasons behind the action, alleging that the decision was influenced by the fact that 42 Muslim students had secured admission to the college through NEET by following all prescribed norms. Terming the move discriminatory and politically motivated, she said it raises serious concerns about fairness and equal treatment in medical education. (KNT)
