‘Raises serious questions on coexistence’: PDP’s Waheed Para on SMVD medical college affiliation cancellation
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Para on Thursday expressed deep concern over the cancellation of affiliation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi (SMVD) Medical College, saying the move raises serious questions about coexistence, inclusivity, and the future of higher education in Jammu and Kashmir.
Reacting to the decision, Para said the withdrawal of affiliation was not merely an administrative matter but one that has far-reaching social and political implications. He said such actions risk undermining trust and harmony in a region that has already faced years of uncertainty.
“The cancellation of affiliation of a medical college raises a fundamental question about coexistence and equal opportunities,” Para said, adding that education should remain above political or ideological considerations. He stressed that institutions meant to serve students should not become victims of decisions that disrupt academic stability.
Para expressed concern for the students who secured admission on merit after clearing competitive examinations like NEET, saying their future must not be jeopardised due to policy or regulatory actions. He urged the authorities to ensure that students are protected and provided uninterrupted avenues to continue their education.
The PDP leader further said that such decisions could create a sense of alienation among youth and erode confidence in the system. “When educational institutions are destabilised, it sends a worrying signal to students and parents alike,” he said.
Calling for a humane and inclusive approach, Waheed Para urged the government and regulatory bodies to review the decision and adopt measures that safeguard students’ interests while strengthening the education sector in Jammu and Kashmir. He added that dialogue and transparency are essential to prevent decisions that could deepen divisions and weaken social cohesion.
