CM Omar assures relocation of SMVD medical college students after NMC withdraws MBBS permission
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accommodate 50 students affected by the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) decision to withdraw permission for the MBBS course at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) in Reasi district.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister said the students, who secured admission on merit through the NEET examination, will be adjusted in other government medical colleges closer to their homes by creating supernumerary seats—additional seats beyond the approved intake.
“It is our legal responsibility to accommodate these students. We will ensure they are relocated to nearby government medical colleges so that their education is not disrupted,” he said, adding that the process would be simple and completed on priority.
The NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board had revoked the Letter of Permission for the institute on January 6, citing shortcomings in infrastructure, faculty, and clinical material. The order also directed the UT administration to relocate the admitted students as supernumerary seats.
CM Omar stressed that the merit of the current batch must be safeguarded and said discussions have already been held with Health Minister Sakina Itoo to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted continuation of the students’ medical education.
