No new administrative units for now, focus on strengthening existing ones: CM Omar Abdullah
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said that the government has no immediate plans to create new administrative units in Jammu and Kashmir, as its priority is to make the already established units fully functional.
The Chief Minister made the statement during Question Hour while responding to supplementary queries raised by Khanyar MLA Salman Ali Sagar and other legislators regarding the demand for the creation of a new tehsil by bifurcating areas under Eidgah and Srinagar North tehsils.
Informing the House, Omar Abdullah said that several administrative units created in the past are still not operational, a concern raised by many MLAs during their meetings with him. “It is impractical to demand new units when existing ones remain non-operational,” he said, adding that the government would consider new administrative units only after ensuring full functionality of the existing ones.
Earlier, Minister for Jal Shakti Javed Ahmed Rana, replying on behalf of the Chief Minister who also holds the Revenue portfolio, informed the Legislative Assembly that services in Eidgah and Srinagar North tehsils are being delivered efficiently within the prescribed timeframe under the Public Services Guarantee Act.
He said the existing infrastructure and manpower are being optimally utilised to ensure smooth service delivery and clarified that there is currently no proposal under consideration to carve out a new tehsil from Eidgah and North tehsils. Legislators Abdul Majeed Larmi and Tanvir Ali Sadiq also raised supplementary questions on the issue.
