Separate Jammu Demand Valid, Should Not Be Opposed: Junaid Azim Mattu

Former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu on Sunday said that if residents of Jammu demand a separate state, their aspirations should not be obstructed. He asserted that a separation of Jammu from Kashmir could, in fact, be beneficial for Kashmir.
Speaking to KNS, Mattu said the concept of a “united” Jammu and Kashmir lacks any strong historical, cultural or linguistic foundation. He claimed that the political linkage between the two regions originated from the Treaty of Amritsar, which he described as an unjust agreement that was never accepted by the people of Kashmir.
Mattu further remarked that the present arrangement does not reflect the natural or historical identities of the regions and that respecting regional aspirations would be a more democratic approach.
