In a post on X, the White House said NATO had been urging Denmark for 20 years to counter Russian influence in Greenland, but alleged that Copenhagen had been unable to act. “Now it is time, and it will be done,” the post said, underscoring Trump’s strong stance on the strategically important Arctic territory.
The remarks come ahead of Trump’s scheduled meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which begins on Monday. Rutte confirmed that he discussed the security situation in Greenland and the Arctic with Trump and said further engagement on the issue would continue.
Meanwhile, several European nations have rallied behind Denmark and Greenland amid reports that the US administration is threatening to impose tariffs on European countries unless Washington is allowed to acquire Greenland. Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.
The statement said that ongoing Arctic military exercises do not pose a threat and warned that the use of tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations, potentially triggering a dangerous escalation.
