Condemnation of Ruhullah Mehdi’s Resignation; Full Support Announced for Omar Abdullah’s Leadership — Shia Cleric Maulana Hassan Ali Rajani

Unity, democratic tolerance, the rights of minorities, and public issues must be given top priority in Kashmiri politics. — Shia Cleric Maulana Hassan Ali Rajani

New Delhi, November 2: Prominent Shia cleric and leader, Maulana Hassan Ali Rajani, has expressed deep regret and condemnation regarding Syed Ruhullah Mehdi’s decision to resign from his party on November 3. He stated that, given the current political climate, such a decision raises several critical questions concerning Kashmiri politics and public representation. Maulana Hassan Ali Rajani noted that the Shia community in Kashmir already occupies the position of a “minority within a minority.” In such circumstances, internal rifts within the political leadership and departures from a party risk undermining the political representation and collective voice of minority groups. Every leader must carefully consider the far-reaching consequences of their political decisions. He pointed out that Sunni Muslims constitute the majority in Kashmir, where various political figures and leaderships—including Omar Abdullah—are actively engaged in public politics. The leadership of Omar Abdullah and the political role of the National Conference should be viewed within the context of Kashmir’s current situation, its democratic framework, and the issues faced by the public. Maulana Rajani added that Kashmir currently requires political stability, public unity, development, employment, education, and the protection of the rights of all religious and social groups. Political differences should be resolved in accordance with the public interest and democratic principles, rather than being driven by personal ego or narrow party interests. He emphasized that all minority groups, including the Shia community in Kashmir, must have effective representation within the political process. Furthermore, the decision of any single political leader cannot be interpreted as the collective opinion of an entire community. The people of Kashmir have the right to freely form their own opinions regarding their political leadership and their future. Maulana Hassan Ali Rajani stated that unity, democratic tolerance, the rights of minorities, and public issues should be given top priority in Kashmiri politics.
