PM Modi, Iran President Pezeshkian Discuss West Asia Crisis, Call for Peace and Stability
During the call, Modi highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation, noting the loss of civilian lives and extensive damage to civilian infrastructure amid the ongoing conflict. He stressed that the safety and security of Indian nationals in the region remains a top priority for India.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said he had a detailed discussion with the Iranian President regarding the crisis and reiterated India’s concern over the escalation of violence.
“Had a conversation with Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the serious situation in the region. Expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure,” Modi wrote.
According to an official statement, President Pezeshkian briefed the Indian Prime Minister about the current developments in Iran and shared Tehran’s perspective on the ongoing conflict in the region. Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact as the situation continues to evolve.
The discussion comes at a time when tensions have sharply increased following the closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route through which a significant portion of India’s oil imports pass. The disruption has raised concerns over global energy supplies and shipping routes.
Reports have also indicated that an oil carrier heading toward India recently came under fire from Iranian forces while attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, further intensifying concerns about maritime security.
Over the past ten days, Prime Minister Modi has been in contact with several leaders across the region, including those from Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Israel and Qatar. During these interactions, he expressed concern over the attacks reported in parts of the region and emphasised the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The conflict intensified following joint military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, during which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly killed last month. In response, Iran has launched drones and missiles targeting Israeli and US military positions across the Gulf region, including areas near major international hubs such as Dubai and Doha.
India has consistently called for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further escalation and ensure stability in the region.
