Almost 50 years ago, a small town woman from West Champaran district in Bihar gave a clarion call to women to feel empowered with their own voices and rise above stumbling blocks to make their places in society.
Yashoda Devi who belonged to Bettiah in Bihar showed the way by standing up for equality and against social and sex discrimination in the 1970s and drove this march with her indomitable spirit and courage of conviction.
Many such revelations and narratives are part of a new book, ‘Yashoda: The Real Story of a Swayamprabha Woman’ by Manoj Kumar Rao, which has been launched recently.
The book narrates the trial and tribulations of ‘Yashoda’ and portrays her as a self-independent woman whose life journey indicated the nuances of women’s empowerment and self-worth, the ability to determine their own choices and the right to influence social change for themselves.
All the 14 chapters of the Hindi book emphasize the implicit power and courage of women to fight widespread social, economic, and political barriers and successfully chase their dreams in a patriarchal society.
Speaking about the book, Manoj Kumar Rao says, ‘’My maiden book ‘Yashoda’ deals with several aspects of our society including untouchability, religious rituals, focus on female education and sterilization, fight for equality and drive against unsocial elements, and conservatism and features the inherent strength of women. The central theme of the book is in the lessons of small stories of her unconventional initiatives, deeds and practices, which are hallmarks for the new-age women too.”
In her childhood, the book mentions, Yashoda defeated her two brothers in the running event. Later, in her middle age, she was elected as the first district councillor from the unreserved seat Chanpatia in West Champaran. She left for her heavenly abode after empowering many women, an essential to the health and social development of families and communities in Bihar.
Rao points out that Yashoda Devi was a woman with a voice, an indicator of a strong woman. Her fearlessness and audacity made her successful. These attributes pave the way for the women to overcome daily challenges and concerns amid challenges galore.
