Traffic on the Srinagar\u2013Jammu National Highway was suspended on Friday after fresh snowfall and heavy rainfall affected multiple stretches of the route, officials said. The adverse weather conditions left hundreds of vehicles stranded at various locations, including Udhampur and Chanderkote.
Officials said vehicular movement was halted following snowfall in the Qazigund\u2013Ramsu sector, while continuous rain in the Udhampur and Ramban areas made the road slippery and unsafe for travel. As a precautionary step, authorities stopped all types of traffic and parked vehicles at designated safe locations along the highway.
According to officials, persistent rainfall and snow accumulation up to Ramsu forced the suspension of traffic to avoid any untoward incidents. Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.
More than one foot of snow has accumulated in Banihal and surrounding areas, with snowfall continuing. Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police (National Highway), Ramban, Raja Adil Hamid, told Greater Kashmir that over a foot of snow was recorded in Banihal, while around six inches accumulated in the Nashri area of Batote.
He added that nearly 900 vehicles, including around 500 passenger Light Medium Vehicles (LMVs), were halted at safe locations as a precautionary measure.
