Children are most susceptible to Coronavirus among the unvaccinated, especially with countries, including India, gradually opening schools after 18 months. The challenge is more in the developing countries where the Governments have to increase the pace of vaccination to beat the third wave while simultaneously extending vaccination to children as schools reopen. In India, where only 10 per cent of the adult population is fully vaccinated, the Government has to procure an additional 204 million doses to cover 104 million children for achieving 80 per cent vaccination in that segment. The Government plans to begin vaccinating children from August, though it is unclear which vaccine will be available. Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin trials in the 2-6 age group may conclude by September. Latest by early January-February, Covaxin may be ready for two to 18-year-olds. Zydus Cadila has applied for emergency use authorisation (EUA) of its Zycov-D vaccine candidate for those aged 12 and above. The Government should explore the option of Pfizer’s mRNA vaccine approved in the European Union for adolescents aged 12-15. Both Moderna and Pfizer have announced trials of vaccines on children as young as six months old. Moderna’s vaccine could be ready for children in the US by early next year. Pfizer is at present the only authorised American vaccine for 12-year-olds while the early results of trials on the 5-11 age group will be out in September.

The Government must acknowledge studies that warn how severe the third wave impact on children can be. Its own data shows over 80,000 kids tested positive in five States in the second wave. In February, the Indian Academy of Paediatrics Intensive Care Chapter dispelled the perception that infected children did not show severe symptoms. The report, published in the Journal of Tropical Paediatrics says the infection led to over 2000 cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) in India. It is a condition in which the patient has fever and inflammation of the heart, lungs and brain. A child may get pneumonia or suffer an antibody-mediated MIS-C. In July, Harvard Health Publishing of Harvard Medical School recommended urgent vaccination of children confirming that MIS-C “can occur in children” and lead to life-threatening problems. Importantly, it says the latest studies show that children “could be capable of spreading the infection”. Schools are reopening in States much before the vaccinations. In a country where safety violations are common, the Government should have a system to ensure children’s safety and hold schools directly responsible for violations of anti-COVID protocols.

There must be a way to physically monitor that children wear face masks at all times, physical distancing is maintained in classrooms, there are arrangements for frequent hand washing and regular cleaning of high-touch surfaces.

The Govt must take up inoculation of kids in a big way before reopening of schools The focus of anti-COVID vaccination in the developed world has already shifted to the under-18 population.
