Speaking in televised remarks at a meeting of Russia’s National Security Council, Putin said, “What happens to Greenland is none of our business,” as tensions rise within NATO over the issue and Denmark faces mounting pressure.
Putin remarked that Denmark has historically treated Greenland as a colony and described its approach as harsh, though he said the matter was separate from the current debate. “That’s a different matter entirely, and I doubt anyone’s interested in it right now. It certainly doesn’t concern us. I think they’ll sort it out among themselves,” he said.
The Russian president also drew historical parallels, recalling that Denmark sold the Virgin Islands to the United States in 1917, while Russia sold Alaska to the US in 1867 for USD 7.2 million, suggesting that territorial transactions were not without precedent.
